This section of roadway had an experimental slab design. The slabs were cut on 40’ centers instead of the typical 20’ centers. The pavement eventually became uneven, thus causing approaching traffic to hit the raised slab front. This stress caused the joint to severely spall.
Transverse cracks then developed throughout the length of the slabs.
