Hot-Pour Crack Sealant

The most cost-effective method of pavement preservation.

Studies have shown that for every $1.00 spent on crack sealing, $4.00 or more is saved in rehabilitation cost.

Trusted by DOTs and road authorities worldwide

Pavement cracks are inevitable, but if left untreated, they widen and become potholes. Crack sealing stops the infiltration of moisture and incompressible debris that lead to further deterioration.

On roads, cracks degrade ride quality and lead to potholes. In pedestrian areas, cracks can present a tripping hazard. And in high-performance environments like airport runways, deterioration can endanger lives. Crack sealing stops those problems before they start, preventing the need for more costly and time-consuming repairs.

Sealing Cracks in Concrete

Crafco’s Roadsaver Gray Crack Sealant offers the same outstanding performance as our conventional sealants, with an inconspicuous gray color that blends into concrete and oxidized asphalt.

Application Process

The steps below are intended as an overview. Before installation, consult the product documentation for specific details

Step 1

Preparation

  • Ensure pavement temperature is ≥40°F (4°C). If lower, warm pavement with a Crafco Hot Air Lance ensure cracks or joints are dry and free of moisture or dew.
  • Clean cracks and joints thoroughly using high-pressure, oil-free compressed air (≥90 psi), sweeping, brushing, sandblasting, or routing to remove debris and loose material.
  • Saw joints or crack reservoirs as needed to specified width and depth; remove old sealant with knives, plows, or saws
  • Install heat-resistant backer rod (ASTM D5249, Type I) to the required depth without punctures.
  • Set up traffic controls per MUTCD to protect the work area.
  • Wear proper protective equipment: gloves, eye protection, and face shield.

Step 2

Installation

  • Melt product in a Crafco Supershot, EZ Series 2, or EZ Pour melter with effective agitation; maintain product temperature per container label (≤525°F / 274°C).
  • Stop agitation when adding product to prevent splashing; agitate continuously during application.
  • Apply using pressure feed wand systems or gravity feed pour pots
  • Install sealant in routed reservoirs, flush fills, or overband configurations per project specifications; reduce surface tack with Crafco DeTack as needed.
  • For Portland cement concrete, fill sawn and cleaned joint reservoirs; typical surface recess up to ¼ in (6 mm) or overband ≤1/16 in (1.5 mm) above the pavement surface and ≤2 in (50 mm) beyond edges.
  • Check adhesion after application; avoid use in fuel or oil spill-prone areas.

Step 3

Post-Installation

  • Allow product to cool and solidify before opening to traffic.
  • Agitate remaining material and reheat once if needed; discard product that gels or becomes stringy.
  • Clean melters and application equipment per manufacturer instructions; avoid contamination with solvents.
  • Inspect joints and cracks to ensure sealant is properly bonded and recessed.
  • Store pallets of product on dry, level surfaces with intact protective coverings; do not stack pallets.
