Crafco Joint Adhesive

Better asphalt joints begin with Crafco.

Crafco Pavement Joint Adhesive is the fastest, simplest and most reliable way to prevent longitudinal asphalt joints from failing prematurely.

Key Benefits:

Joint-Adhesive-prepared

Trusted by DOTs and road authorities worldwide

Asphalt joints often deteriorate because the first pass has an unconfined edge with poor compaction. A thin layer of Crafco’s joint adhesive before laying the second pass effectively bonds and seals the passes together to reduce raveling and crack formation from water, debris and thermal movement.

The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) conducted a six-year study of eight longitudinal joint construction techniques across five states. Crafco Pavement Joint Adhesive performed the best, with no significant cracking of the joint.

Application Process

The steps below are intended as an overview.

Before installation, consult the product documentation for specific details

Preparation

  • Ensure joint faces are clean, dry, and free of dust or debris. Use a Crafco Hot Air Lance if needed.
  • Load material blocks into a Crafco Super Shot or EZ Series || melter. Do not use direct fire or air-heated units.
  • Heat material to between 350°F (177°C) and 400°F (204°C), following all safety precautions.

Installation

  • Apply adhesive with a pressure-feed wand and joint adhesive sealing shoe to coat the vertical face of the asphalt mat.
  • Place adhesive in a continuous band about 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick along the joint.
  • Position paving and compact the new mat as usual, starting with the roller on the hot side overlapping 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) onto the cold side.

Post-Installation

  • Keep traffic off the treated joint until the surface is stable.
  • Avoid excess overlap of adhesive beyond the joint face.
  • Clean equipment per manufacturer instructions; use only approved solvents if required.
  • Store remaining product in original packaging, protected from moisture and weather.
