Trusted by DOTs and road authorities worldwide

Fixing potholes quickly is important to maintain a safe, smooth ride for vehicles. Crafco HP Cold Patch strongly adheres to pavement and won’t ravel or rut, while specially selected aggregate encourages firm compaction. No field mixing or heating is required, and HP Cold Patch works in any season – even in cold, wet conditions. It also stays pliable in storage for up to a year, so you can be ready when potholes appear.

Crafco offers two varieties of cold patch:

  • HP ER Cold Patch is a traditional black cold patch, but with an environmentally friendly formula and no VOCs.
  • HP Concrete Cold Patch offers the same reliable performance with a unique gray color that blends into concrete and oxidized asphalt.

Application Process

The steps below are intended as an overview.

Before installation, consult the product documentation for specific details

Step 1

Preparation

  • Clean the repair area by removing loose debris, stones, sand, and dust.
  • For potholes, remove excess water (especially in winter) to prevent ice buildup under the patch.
  • For larger repairs (road cuts, water main breaks), saw-cut edges back to sound pavement and sweep thoroughly.
  • For trip points, remove loose material before patching.

Step 2

Installation

  • Place HP Cold Patch directly into the repair in 2″ (5 cm) lifts.
  • Compact each lift before adding more material.
  • Overfill slightly, leaving a ½” (1 cm) crown to allow for traffic compaction.
  • For trip points, slope the patch to the highest point and compact. (Optional: dust with Portland cement to reduce vehicle or pedestrian pick-up.)

Step 3

Post-Installation

Compact using one of the following methods:

  • Truck Tire – Drive over the patch slowly for small repairs or shoulder edges.
  • Traffic (“Throw and Go”) – Least costly, but less durable in high-speed or turning traffic.
  • Hand Tamper – Simple and low-cost; effectiveness depends on operator effort.
  • Plate Compactor/Jumping Jack – Provides stronger, more reliable compaction.
  • Ride-On or Walk-Behind Compactor – Best for large or critical repairs; produces the most durable results.
